Frequent Interior Decorating Mistakes

Interior design is a subtle craft. Every single detail can make a big difference in the overall look and feel of a room. That’s why even small mistakes can ruin a design, even a good design. Learning to avoid these five basic interior decorating mistakes will give you a head start next time you decide to remodel your house or room.

Wrongly-sized furniture
Before you purchase a piece of furniture, make sure to measure the space it will go in first to make sure that it’s the right fit. There’s nothing worse than spending all day shopping only to come home and find that the piece you chose is not the right width or length. Also, remember to choose pieces that match the size of the room you are decorating. Meaning, huge furniture in small rooms, for example, can be overwhelming and will most likely look bad.

Painting the walls white
Painting (or leaving) the walls white is a mistake more often than most people think. Many times, homeowners leave the walls of a room white as a way of playing it safe. But white walls add nothing (most of the time) to a room’s design. On the other hand, a carefully chosen color can pull a room’s design together like nothing else. One common argument for white walls is that, when it comes time to sell the house, white walls appeal more to potential buyers who want to picture their own design ideas. However, when putting a house on the market, it’s always best to repaint it anyway. In the mean time, though, don’t be afraid to throw in some color.

Everything in the room matches
If everything in the room matches perfectly, (the colors, the blinds, the table sets, everything) usually nothing stands out, and the room ends up feeling clinical and mechanical. Instead of perfectly matching colors, coordinate. Meaning, use complimentary hues and different shades and variations of a certain color/color pattern.

Artwork too high
When you hang artwork up on the walls, don’t hand it too high up, as this will make it seem disconnected from the rest of the room. No one wants to have to strain their neck just to examine a painting. Always place it at eye-level (usually about 60” off the ground).

Bad Lighting
A lot of people forget about the importance of lighting. If you can’t see the room’s design properly, there is little point in undertaking a remodeling project. Also, lighting is crucial in setting the mood of a room. Get blinds that let in plenty of sunlight when you need it and make sure to always have more than one interior light source, so you can adjust the light settings depending on the occasion.
