How to Build a Children's Toy Box

First, you will need to decide how big it should be. The standard is three feet long by two feet deep. The next step is to buy some good strong hardwood. Then, you will mark on the wood with a pencil where you will need to start cutting. Be sure to wear safety glasses when cutting wood. When you have all your pieces cut, you will need to sand them down. Make them smooth as you can get them.

Next step is to screw it all together. First off, drill holes slightly smaller than the screws. Put your screws in place. Do not forget to place wood putty in the screw holes, and then sand them off after it has all dried.

Make sure to have at least three hinges on hand for the lid, one for each side and the third in the middle. This way it can be opened and closed easily. It is common to cut a small piece out of the front right at the top on all sides. This way if it slams down, little fingers will not get caught. If you want a little more fancy look, you can add a back to the toy box, this way it can double as a bench. This can be done by using a plain piece of wood, or if you have a girl, you can use a router and cut a heart out in the center. Or maybe just slats for a boy. Let your imagination run wild and see what you come up with.

After all this is done, you will want to paint it, or even a beautiful stain is good. You may even wish to paint the child's name on the outside. Another idea is to have the child put their hands in paint and place hand prints on the outside. This is a very popular look.

Another thing you can do is to put wheels on the bottom, this way your child's toy box will be mobile. Wheels can be bought at your local home improvement store. All you need to install them are an electric drill, and some screws. You will just drill smaller holes, and then drill your screws in place. Your child will love this. They can take it with them everywhere!
